The Dangers of installing an old rear axle on a new combine

Here at Mud Hog, we’ve received dozens of calls asking us whether or not it’s a good idea to transfer a Mud Hog rear-wheel drive axle from one combine to another.

Given that every Mud Hog hydraulic rear-wheel drive system is engineered to fit one specific combine model, we feel it necessary to explain the risks involved with installing a rear-wheel drive axle on a machine for which it was not intended.

No Two Axles are Identical

Every Mud Hog hydraulic rear-wheel drive system is unique in that each is custom-built for one specific machine. Our experienced engineers work tirelessly to ensure that for every combine make and model, there is a Mud Hog designed to fit that combine exactly. This is to ensure that your Mud Hog rear-wheel drive system delivers the level of performance, durability and efficiency you’ve come to expect.

What does this mean if you’re considering the installation of a Mud Hog axle on a combine for which it was not originally designed? Well, unless that Mud Hog is being transferred to a combine that is the exact same year, make, and model, it simply won’t work, and could lead to a number of problems.

What Could Happen

1. Structurally, every Mud Hog axle is made to hold the weight of a specific combine. By swapping your Mud Hog onto a newer, heavier machine, you put yourself and those around you in danger, as the axle could break while your combine is in use.

2. Attempting to install a rear-wheel drive axle on a mechanical drive combine not only requires the installation of a hydro pump and reservoir to power your machine, it forces you to add electrical switches along with a compensator valve to adjust to every gear change you make.

3. Hydraulic contamination could occur within your combine’s hydrostatic system, which can greatly impact overall system performance, leading to decreased load-carrying ability and accelerated mechanical wear.

While shifting a Mud Hog rear-wheel drive system from your old combine to your new machine may save you a few dollars in the short term, such a move could cost you dearly in the long run. Don’t risk damage to your new combine, or yourself. The experts at Mud Hog can help you equip your combine with custom-designed rear axle for much less than the cost of repairing damage caused by placing the wrong axle on the wrong machine.
